Love Your Bed as You Love Thyself
12 years ago, and all in the spirit of mocking the popular myth which labels Montenegrins as lazy, a little competition was launched to find & crown the ‘laziest citizen’. Now, in it’s 12th edition, just seven competitors are left, all vying for the title and the €1000 prize that comes with it.
Held in Northern Montenegro the previous record was 117 hours, however, contestants have already beaten that this year as the competition has now entered its 20th day. The competition started with 21, and there’s seven left which still includes the winner from 2021, Dubravka Asic.
The rules of the event are simple, Stay Lying Down, as standing or sitting will get you immediately disqualified. There is however a ten-minute break every eight hours to use the facilities! Competitors can also use phones or laptops plus of course they can eat and drink. Dubravka commented that ‘everyone currently feels good, there are no health issues, they are being well looked after, and now all that remains is to stay lying down’.
Filip Knezevic entered the competition for the first time this year confident of getting to the winning post, and he commented recently that: ‘We have everything we need, company is brilliant and the time goes by very quickly’.
The ‘lazy myth’ actually refers to cultural references such as the comical list of unofficial commandments which are often sold as souvenirs in the holiday hotspots of Budva and Kotor. The ‘Ten Commandments’ are perfect for living a life of relaxation and leisure, though in reality they are only really followed during the weekends and summer holidays!
Number 1 – Man is bored tired and lives to rest.
Number 2 – Love thy bed as you love thyself
Number 3 – Rest during the Day, so you can sleep at night
Number 4 – Do not work, work kills
Number 5 – If you see someone resting, help them out
Number 6 – Work as little as you can and transfer all the work you can to another
Number 7 – There is salvation in shade, nobody died from resting
Number 8 – Work causes illnesses, do not die young
Number 9 – If you feel the urge to work, sit down, wait and let it pass naturally
Number 10 – When you see people eating and drinking approach them, when you see people working, don’t disturb them.
